Now More Than Ever: Embracing Our Selves

"Now More Than Ever: Embracing Our Selves” is an inclusive event focusing on the diverse experiences of living in female bodies and the strength derived from sisterhood. The program features the powerful film SMOKE SAUNA SISTERHOOD and seeks to foster acceptance, self-discovery, and provide a supportive space for healing. In celebration of strength and joy, attendees will engage in essential discussions and optional rejuvenating sauna and healing sessions. March 3rd from 10-4pm at The Waldo Theatre in Waldoboro for adults, ages 16 and over.

Explore a diverse range of topics and engage in discussions about connection with our physical bodies, nurturing body positivity, and the journey towards recovery from sexual trauma. Discover the strength that comes from sisterhood and the collective healing that occurs when we unite in understanding and compassion.

The highlight of the day is an exclusive screening of the poignant film SMOKE SAUNA SISTERHOOD. This powerful documentary by Estonian Filmmaker Anna Hints explores the lives of women who - in the darkness of a smoke sauna - share their innermost secrets and intimate experiences, washing off the shame trapped in their bodies and regaining their strength through a sense of communion. This film shows nudity and deals with mature subject matter including approximately 10 minutes of footage that describes an experience with sexual violence and may not be suitable for younger viewers. We will have trained individuals for those seeking support at the theatre.

We will also be screening SWIMMING THROUGH by Chicago based Filmmaker Sam Sanders. This beautiful, award-winning short tells the story of three women who step into the icy water of Lake Michigan and find that everything that is wrong or stressful in their lives just seems to fade away. The film follows these women as they find solace in the extreme but rewarding ritual of cold water immersion.

Witness the transformative journey of these women as they share their stories of resilience, empowerment, and sisterhood. Following the film, we will have a panel discussion to examine the film’s themes and goals more deeply. Discussion will include the power of the body to work with nature’s heat and cold, fire and water, to achieve physical and emotional release. Panelists include Carrie Levine (CNM, IFMCP, founder of Whole Woman Health), Jackie Stratton (owner of Cedar Grove Sauna and Certified Bath Master), Jess Ruhlin (Deputy Director of Hearty Roots Maine), Ashley Baldwin (Cold Plunger & Wellness Entrepreneur) and Sabrina Symke (New Hope Midcoast). We are grateful to have the incredibly talented Ali Stevenson as Moderator.

As part of this unique experience, attendees will have the opportunity to sign up for rejuvenating sauna sessions in mobile saunas provided by Cedar Grove Sauna and Native Sauna. Immerse yourself in therapeutic warmth and embrace the chance to connect with others in a serene and comfortable environment. These sauna sessions offer not only physical relaxation, but also a space for open conversations and shared moments of healing.
